Fragile X Awareness
Fragile X is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability — and it's personal to our family. We support awareness because we live it.
What Is Fragile X Syndrome?
Fragile X syndrome is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and the leading known single-gene cause of autism. It is caused by a mutation in the FMR1 gene on the X chromosome. The syndrome affects approximately 1 in 4,000 males and 1 in 8,000 females.
People with Fragile X syndrome may experience intellectual disability, developmental delays, learning disabilities, and anxiety. Symptoms vary widely — some individuals are mildly affected, others more significantly. There is currently no cure, though therapies and supportive care can improve quality of life.
Fragile X is also the most common known cause of autism spectrum disorder. An estimated 1 in 151 women and 1 in 468 men carry the FMR1 premutation — often without knowing it. Carriers can pass Fragile X to their children.
Our Connection
Green Tree Jewelry is a family company. Fragile X is part of our family's story. We support awareness because most people — including many carriers — have never heard of it.
